Here is a plumber's honest guide to which is which — plus what to do while help is on the way.

The one test that sorts most of it out

Ask yourself a single question: is it getting worse by the minute?

Water actively spreading, sewage rising, no water at all, or the smell of gas — those get worse the longer you wait, and they cause real damage or danger fast. Those are emergencies.

A slow drip or a nuisance that is annoying but stable can usually hold until morning.

That test covers most situations. Here are the specifics.

Call right now — these are true emergencies

A burst or actively leaking pipe

A burst pipe can put hundreds of gallons into your home in an hour. It wrecks drywall, floors, ceilings, and anything stored nearby, and it does not stop on its own.

Shut off your water and call. This is the definition of an emergency.

Sewage backing up into the house

Raw sewage coming up through a floor drain, tub, or toilet is a health hazard, not just a plumbing problem. It contaminates everything it touches.

Stop using water and call immediately. The longer it flows, the bigger the cleanup.

No water at all

If you turn on the tap and nothing comes out — and it is not a planned shutoff — something is seriously wrong. A main line break, a well pump failure, or in winter a frozen and possibly cracked line. A house with no water is not livable, and some of those causes get worse fast.

The smell of gas

If you smell gas near a gas water heater, furnace, or line, treat it as urgent. Leave the house, and call from outside. This is a safety emergency, full stop.

A major leak or a flooding water heater

A water heater tank that lets go dumps forty-plus gallons across the floor and keeps feeding the flood until the supply is shut off. Any leak you cannot control belongs in the emergency column.

What to do while you wait

One clogged toilet when you have another bathroom to use.
